“Stretching” includes different methods and doses. A brief static stretch before a sprint, a longer flexibility session, and movement through an active warm-up are not interchangeable. Their immediate and long-term effects can differ.
Range of motion can change through tolerance, tissue and nervous-system responses, repeated exposure, and strength gained through a larger range. More range is not automatically better. The useful amount is the amount that supports the task without creating unnecessary discomfort or displacing other priorities.
Warm-up and stretching are also different ideas. A warm-up prepares a person for an activity and can include gradual movement, rehearsal, or task-specific practice. Stretching may be one part of that process, but it need not be the whole process.
For example: before a recreational run, a person might gradually walk and jog, rehearse the movement, and include a brief calf stretch because it feels useful. The stretch supports a purpose within the warm-up rather than serving as a universal requirement.

Evidence
Research supports stretching as one method for improving range of motion. Acute static stretching of sufficient duration can temporarily reduce some measures of maximal performance, whereas shorter or appropriately integrated stretching may have little practical effect. Findings depend on duration, muscle group, performance task, and what else occurs in the warm-up.
Evidence does not support presenting pre-exercise stretching alone as a dependable prevention strategy for all injuries or post-exercise soreness. Injury risk is influenced by exposure, preparation, prior injury, sleep, environment, load, and many other factors.
Clinical Perspective
Choose stretching around a specific goal: reaching a needed position, preparing for a preferred activity, or maintaining a useful routine. Avoid forcing a painful range or assuming that every sensation represents tissue shortening. Persistent loss of motion, neurological symptoms, acute trauma, or a major side-to-side change may require assessment beyond a general stretching program.
